Practicing Good Tree Care

Before we get into specific tree care practices, it's important to understand the basic nature of trees and what they need. Trees are living organisms. Just like any other living organism they have basic needs in order to grow and thrive. Whether it is an oak, pine, or maple, all trees require water, sunlight, nutrients, and space to grow and thrive. Evaluating your tree's surroundings and correcting any deficiencies will help lay a good foundation for you practicing good tree care....
One of the most important things (and often ignored) is selecting the right trees in the first place! This is an obvious but important step in ensuring the long-term success of your tree. Some of the factors that should be considered are: climate, soil conditions, space constraints, for example. You can also bring in a professional tree surgeon that can help to guide you in these kinds of choices.

After choosing the appropriate tree species, you'll want to plant the tree properly. Proper planting technique is important for helping to establish a healthy root system from the beginning and encourage good growth. When you plant a tree, make sure that the ball of the root is level with the surrounding soil. Make sure to properly water, and then mulch around the roots after planting, as this will help the tree to keep its moisture and also prevent excessive weeds.

Ongoing watering is also important for good tree care. This is especially true in our famously hot summer months down here in the South! While you shouldn't water too much, you should water "deeply" when you do water. This not only gives the tree a drink, but this strategic watering technique helps the roots to grow down deep and also gives it a "drought tolerance."

Regular trimming is another important part of good tree care. Proper pruning will help your trees overall structure, which helps promote proper air flow; by removing dead or dying branches you are also redirecting the energy to go into the better branches, while simultaneously removing the potential hazard of falling dead branches.

These are just a few tree tips to get you started. If you need any help in choosing the right tree, or performing the proper trimming and pruning, please give Lacombe Trees a call today. We love serving our customers here in Lacombe, and will be happy to serve you as well.
